In this edition dedicated largely to music, we challenged Armando Sousa, archivist and programmer at the Fonoteca Municipal do Porto (FMP), to select a disc from this public archive that had a connection to the city. The choice fell on In Trux We Pux 01, released on 23 October 2020, the first of a four-disc collection led by Favela Discos, which set out ‘to record and expose a set of sound currents and collaborative practices that have developed on the scene of experimental and improvised music made in Porto’. This project was supported by the Municipality of Porto as part of the Criatório 2019 artistic creation support programme.

This disc, he says, ‘represents the relationship between experimental music and the city, the way the city incorporates experimentalism, avant-garde music, improvisation and collaboration between musicians, which is fundamental’. ‘All these songs are made in collaboration, and that says a lot about what happens in Porto; in this case, it's a snapshot of what was happening here in 2019 and 2020, in a pre-pandemic context,’ he says.

This first volume, mastered by Rafael Silva, contains a selection of 23 musicians from different fields of electronic music who were invited to collaborate and produce an unreleased track. The disc's cover features a photograph by Nuno Oliveira and the graphic design was by Rita Castilho.

‘The choice of this disc is also to counter the idea that the FMP is a dead archive of old discs; it's a collection that, at all times, wants to stay alive and connected with the city,’ Armando emphasises. ‘I wanted to choose a disc that had as direct a relationship as possible with the city and that somehow reflected its spirit,’ he says.
