"Flirting" with Marta Bateira
Interviews
Conjugar: Catrapiscar com Marta Bateira

Flirting, that sort of leering wink, will always be one of the best parts of a date. For Marta Bateira, a comedian from Porto, the conquest of the "vai chegando no sapatinho" and all the expectation that this initial moment provokes are the starting point for a successful encounter, and increase the likelihood of that happy ending (which we all hope for!).

It was by sharing these intimate moments in short videos on YouTube that Marta created her character Beatriz Gosta. This was the beginning of Marta's flirting, which soon turned into a serious case of the public falling in love with her and vice versa. The culprit in all this is Portuguese rapper and long-time friend Capicua, who prodded her: "What if you told stories in front of the camera like you tell your friends? What if those same stories created empathy for those on the other side of the camera?" The challenge was right and it paid off. "People feel represented and encouraged to be who they are. I say what others think and don't have the courage to say, and people laugh," she reveals.

The Beatriz of 2015 is not the same as the Beatriz of 2024; the character has evolved just like the stages of Marta's life. Her personal journey almost merges into her everyday stories, which, after all, are those of all of us. After becoming a mum, she felt the need to tackle the subject of motherhood and talk bluntly about the doubts, problems and daydreams of this phase, from sleep deprivation to physical and emotional changes. Sexuality continues to be one of the central themes of her work, with a focus on education and breaking down rigid structures of thought. So from this character we can expect a woman in constant mutation. But there's something about her that doesn't change and is ingrained in the essence of her work — Porto. That good place to live, to be, to hook up and fall madly in love with. It's made up of landscapes that would make a postcard and which, in themselves, are an invitation to stories of (un)love and (un)encounters.

"Jardim das Virtudes is the place where people have the most dates, Maus Hábitos [an art space with a bar and restaurant] has a good cucumber sangria, Praça dos Poveiros is also an option, but the best option is going to Ribeira de Gaia: no-one can find you there." Marta Bateira recognises that the people of Porto are captivating, "they're a warm people, a bit thuggish and suspicious, but when they hug you they make you feel like you're home, they give you food and ask you to repeat your mother's or grandmother's snacks three or four times". And, of course, "they always have a joke up their sleeve and they say it with gumption; they're outwardly hard, but they have a heart that's easily molten".

2024 will be a year of great revelations, new projects and many shows. "I'll be travelling around the country and communicating in various formats, the YouTube channel will be resurrected, because there's no filter there and I can be free and say what I want." Beatriz Gosta will continue to make an impact on many of us and flirt with us with her disarming eyes and a handful of precise words.
