Thinking Hand, Crafting Hand offers a glimpse into Diogo Amaro’s design and making process, constantly blurring the line between the two, through his latest work, MATERIA tables.
MATERIA is a collection designed around three local materials – chestnut, oak, and cork – after setting up the workshop in an old barrel maker’s workshop, located in a traditional barrel maker’s area. The new collection emerges as a response to the unique atmosphere of this space, captured by photographer Francisco Ascensão, and presented in dialogue with the tables at the exhibition.
Diogo Amaro is an architect and cabinetmaker based in Porto. After several years working in architecture, he spent two years learning from the master cabinetmakers at FRESS, absorbing all the knowledge they had to transmit. In 2022, he participated in the Homofaber event in Venice and attended a workshop with Japanese master carpenter Takami Kawai and designer Wataru Kumanu at Domaine de Boisbuchet in France. The following year, he was invited to join the Homofaber Guide , curated by the Michelangelo Foundation, and in 2024, he presented his debut collection CHICAGO during Lisbon Design Week.
