INSTITUTO will host South African architect Sechaba Maape in an artistic residency, bringing a perspective of new African architecture to Portugal.
Sechaba Maape is an architect and director of Afreetekture. He is a senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) School of Architecture and Planning where he studied architecture and obtained a PhD. Sechaba currently researches and teaches theory and project, and supervises master's students focusing on energy-efficient cities. He currently lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, although spends a considerable amount of time visiting ritual sites all over the country. Sechaba Maape was the co-curator of the South African Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale.
In his residency, with support from ArtWorks, Sechaba Maape develops the creation of an original trophy for the winners of the 12th edition of the Arquiteturas Film Festival, organised by INSTITUTO, taking place from June 25 to 29, 2025.
Sechaba Maape will also give a public lecture about his work, on the 24th January, at 18h30, to present the creative and craftsmanship process behind his residency.
