On September 23, 1543, the Portuguese arrived in Japan, landing on the island of Tanegashima in southern Japan. The Japanese had never seen people with round eyes, long noses and brown hair. They were probably also amused by the 'outsiders' puffed pants, which were fashionable in Portugal. In this workshop, we'll explore the Namban screens, learn some facts about the meeting of two different cultures and the influences they had on each other, and then build a boat using the art of paper folding — MNSR
