Night and Fog in Japan
Nagisa Ōshima
[Batalha] - Night and Fog in Japan

The last of the three films Ōshima released in 1960, in which he depicted the position held by youth in modern Japanese society, stands out for being the most bitter, but also the most analytic. The narrative revolves around a group of ex-student activists who had protested against the US-Japan Security Treaty, and who meet each other once more at a wedding. The film explores the disenchantment and ideological conflicts among these characters, who once struggled passionately for Leftist causes. Widely acclaimed by critics and considered one of Ōshima’s most personal works, this drama reflects the filmmaker’s own disillusionment with the orthodox Left of the era. Released just before the assassination of the leader of the Japanese Socialist Party by a far-right student, the film was withdrawn from cinemas days after its premiere, leading Ōshima to leave Shōchiku, the studio with which he had been working.
