NEGENTROPY: The Last Man in the Wasteland
Explore a post-apocalyptic universe in a post-techno operatic experience directed by Hugo Paquete.
Enter a disruptive universe where a last man deliriously ponders his remaining days, seeking a revelation in his terminal breath as an extravagant form of survival in a radical and barren land of collapsed fragments, once symbols of technological monumentality, power and civilizational progress. Elements erased in the erosion of this last man's contemporary time, like cosmic dust where his desire for survival persists.
This work, directed and conceived by Hugo Paquete, presents us with a dystopian post-apocalyptic universe, where electronic music, noise and interaction come together in 5 acts exploring the place and circumstance of existence in a last gasp, the end of a man in an austere electronic desert like a post-apocalyptic cloud, where existence collapses into madness and asphyxiation. Inspired by the works of composer Jani Christou, NEGENTROPY recreates and expands the compositions Anaparastasis I: The Baritone (1968) and Anaparastasis III: The Pianist (1968), elevating their experience to new intensities, contextualizing them in a sound, visual and scenic meta-dramaturgy, using improvisation and programming of co2 readings for sound, in a catharsis as a suspension of human and technological tragedy.
This piece, developed in a site-specific format for the dome of Porto's Planetarium, features 3D video content created by Julius Horsthuis and spatialized sound for eight audio channels, transporting the senses to a dissonant world of rhythm and noise.
On stage, we have the talented baritone Rui Baeta who embodies “the last man”, accompanied by electronic manipulations by Hugo Paquete. There is also the special participation of guest musicians for the different performances, such as Pedro Carvalho and Ianina Khmelik on violin, and Cláudio de Pina on synthesizer and programming.
This project also features a team of actors, performers and noise generators, such as: Bruno Sousa, Amanda Duda, Alex Alvão, Delrik Borba, Flora Gouveia, Rita Rocha, Rodrigo Guimarães and Leticia Arlandis - who take on the role of human echoes, evoking memories of a humanity lost between the past and the future.
In this project we explore the concepts of radical ecology, astronomy, science, mysticism and death, imaginary and mysterious traditions in order to uncover the limits of the self in the face of the abyss. The aim is to start from the technological cathartic ritual, from the voice on stage, where myth, the transcendent, the primordial and ritual shape panic and hysteria as operative concepts in the face of the apocalyptic, in an aesthetic approach that crosses disciplines.
