Éric Normand

Improviser, bassist, instrument designer, composer, singer and music and concert producer.

As an improviser, he develops a personal and radical performance on a homemade electric bass equipped with microphones and objects that re-power and vibrate small electronic devices, creating an electric flow interrupted by the instrumental gesture.

With this ensemble he favours duets with Jim Denley (flute and sax), Philippe Lauzier (bass clarinet and sax), Xavier Charles (clarinet), Pierre-Yves Martel (viola de gamba and electronics), Jean-Luc Guionnet (saxophone), as well as various spontaneous encounters.

He also composes for ensembles and multidisciplinary projects.

Interested in collective creation and orchestral improvisation, he led the Grand groupe régional d'improvisation libérée (GGRIL) for seven years, a 15-piece band that worked with composers such as Evan Parker, Jean Derome, Robert Marcel Lepage and Michael Fischer.

Their music has been programmed or performed at various festivals in Canada, Australia and Europe. It has also been broadcast by Radio-Canada, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC, Radio Grenouille and various university radio stations.
