The film has a prologue and four chapters - the hopes of fire; the hopes shot; the outbreaks of bitterness; the sleep of the just - describing a kind of journey from hope to desolation. Between tear gas and opium vapours, Philippe Garrel films, in dazzling black and white (photography by William Lubtchansky), the impetuous nights of a group of 20-year-olds in the midst of May 68. Hallucinated shadows, misty eyes, intense faces full of nascent love, the characters unleash a beauty from another time. In between, a mad love between a girl and a boy who notice each other during the insurrection. All the actors in the group are aware that they have been filmed by a genius, the contemporary equivalent of Murnau, and that this film is our Aurora (Clothilde Hesme, actress in the film, in a presentation note from the Cinémathèque Française).
