João Machado presents a recital at the Casa da Guitarra that includes, among other works, five short pieces he composed based on traditional Lunda melodies collected in the 1950s by Portuguese musicologist Hermínio do Nascimento.
Négritude, a Francophone literary movement, sought to valorise and exalt the cultural values of the black populations who had suffered under French colonialism, both in Africa and the West Indies. He felt the concept was both fair and pertinent, and had the idea of extending it from literature to classical guitar music.
