The eternal call of the sea in a programme that brings together two works of great descriptive power. Miguel Torga was one of the many poets to narrate the great Portuguese maritime epic, particularly in the seven poems that make up his História Trágico-Marítima - referring to the famous 18th century narratives of the same title. It was on these poems that Fernando Lopes-Graça composed the Cantata for orchestra, baritone and choir of 36 female voices, a work that brought him his second Composition Prize from the Círculo de Cultura Musical. Premiered at the IV Gulbenkian Festival in 1960 and rarely performed since, the cantata will be performed for the first time in Porto. On the other hand, the symphonic sketches La mer are considered the ultimate exponent of the art of suggestion and Debussy's unique ability to represent extra-musical elements in his music. It's an ingenious work that challenges the listener's imagination, hinting at the rising of the day, the movement of the waves or the dialogue between the wind and the sea. — Casa da Música
