At the beginning of the 20th century, the artists La Sarabia, Nyota Inyoka, François Benga and Leila Bederkhan presented their dances in Europe with great success. Amanda Piña breathes new life into their work with Exotica, identifying the legacy of racialised artists performing on European stages and what she refers to as "the brown history of European dance". Exotica is an exuberant ritual conceived as a séance through which the dancers, as ancestors, queer people and black women from the past and present, resurface on stage and enter into dialogue with the audience's gaze and ancestry. Their performative presence opens up space for re-enactments, triggering invocations, exorcisms and celebration. - Amanda Piña
