Eami — which means “forest” and “world” in Ayoreo — is a young girl living in the Paraguayan section of the Chaco. When she witnesses her native land invaded by colonisers, she welcomes Asoja, a goddess-bird-woman, into her body. In a trance, our protagonist walks through her beloved forest, on a spiritual quest to heal her pain. Blending elements of fiction and documentary, Paz Encina’s dreamlike work depicts the deep connection between territory, culture, and the displacement of the Indigenous Ayoreo-Totobiegosode people in the Paraguayan Chaco. Winner of the top prize at Rotterdam.
