The Serralves Museum is presenting the first anthological exhibition by Portuguese artists João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, which will take place at Casa de Serralves. The exhibition will bring together a wide selection of works by the authors, some of which are new and specially conceived for this occasion.
The choice of Casa de Serralves, one of the most important examples of Art Deco in the country, as the venue for the exhibition is quite significant. The iconic pink house, with its luxurious and opulent materials, will serve as a stage and setting for historical re-enactments and unexpected encounters proposed by the artists. From the kitchen to the living and dining rooms, via the staircases and bathrooms, the artists will occupy practically every compartment of the former private residence, transporting the visitor to the history and memory of this place.
The artists have been working on a series of themes related to Portuguese history and culture. These include the relationship between folklore and national identity, maritime expansion and the Portuguese colonial empire, fascism and culture in the old regime, denialism and the memory, violence and silencing policies of the dictatorships, but also, and in a continuous and relevant way, the impact of HIV/AIDS and the stigma and prejudice towards the LGBTQIA+ community and, in particular, homosexuals. These themes complement and dialogue with the country's recent history and with the programme for the second half of 2024, which includes the 50th anniversary of 25 April. Casa Vale Ferreira will provide a unique context for reflection and re-reading of the artists' work, which has been reinvented and renewed over more than twenty years.
The exhibition has been organised and produced by the Serralves Foundation and is curated by Inês Grosso, the Museum's chief curator.
