Carlos Bica is one of the few Portuguese musicians who has achieved international prominence and has become a reference on the European jazz scene. Among the various musical projects he leads and in addition to his collaborations with theatre, dance and cinema, the AZUL trio, with guitarist Frank Möbus and drummer Jim Black, has become the bassist and composer's trademark. Alongside the ongoing activity of the Azul trio, other projects have been born and recorded, such as Diz, Single, Matéria-Prima, I Am The Escaped One and the most recent Playing with Beethoven, which has received enormous praise from international critics and was nominated by the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik as one of the best albums of 2023.
For this project, Carlos Bica invited saxophonist José Soares, vibraphonist Eduardo Cardinho and guitarist Gonçalo Neto. The generational difference is an asset to this project, which features some of the most talented and creative musicians from a new generation of Portuguese musicians. It will be with this line-up that Carlos Bica will release a new album with new compositions in June 2024 on the Clean Feed record label, marking a new path in his artistic creation.
When talking about Carlos Bica's music, critics usually emphasise the way in which it intertwines references from different universes, from contemporary classical music to folk, rock, jazz and improvised music. Carlos Bica's music is exciting, modern and contagious. Bica is an attentive listener to the outside world - hence his modernity - and an innate songwriter. In his compositions we find fragments of things that only our subconscious recognises, but exposed in such a way that they appear absolutely natural and obvious to us. Nothing to do with some form of pastiche or copy/paste; rather an obvious way of telling stories made up of bits of everyday life that we recognise in a strange way." - "All Jazz"
Carlos Bica - double bass
José Soares - alto saxophone and clarinet
Gonçalo Neto - guitar
Eduardo Cardinho - vibraphone
