They are 7 of the 12 women who are seed keepers on the Urok Islands - Bijagós archipelago, Guinea Bissau - who speak both Creole and Bijagós. At a moment when biodiversity - which resides in seeds - is in danger, the role of these women takes on an importance that goes beyond the need for food and nutritional security for families. Thus, the artistic proposal, using photography, video and installation, is to create, through the narratives of these guardians of seeds and their sacred forests, an opportunity to reflect on a universal condition from a distant land.
"Ground, earth, people" at MIRA
The MIRA galleries - MIRA FORUM, Espaço MIRA and MIRA | performing arts - are part of RPAC, the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network, which is supporting a project to be developed with three structures from other parts of the country: Colégio das Artes (Coimbra), Air 351 (Cascais) and Lugar do Desenho (Gondomar).
The theme agreed between the partners was "In Freedom" and MIRA FORUM is presenting its proposal, the cycle "GROUND, LAND AND PEOPLE" with three exhibitions opening on June 15. The cycle will continue with more exhibitions, two conferences, video presentations and other events until October.
Opening: June 15, 2024, 4pm
