Every Friday in February is a film night at Casa Comum. Belle Époque et Liberté / Belle Époque and Freedom is a French-language film series promoted by Casa Comum and Alliance Française Porto.
The cycle kicks off on 2 February with 13 short films made during the Belle Époque period by Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in history to be given exceptional "authorisation" to direct in a professional context that had, until then, been reserved for men. Until 1907, she dominated production at Gaumont (the oldest film company in the world), experimenting with tricks and special effects. Among the films that make up this programme are No Magnetizer, Finissecular Surgery, Mechanical Hat and Chocolates, Indiscreet Questions, The Results of Feminism and Madame with Wishes.
The screenings, always at 9.30pm, are free but subject to capacity.
